Prince Louis is coming of age in a new era for the Royal Family. His parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton, are focused on modernizing the monarchy, which impacts how they’re raising their children. Although Louis is fourth in line to the throne after his father and two older siblings, it’s unlikely he’ll ever become king.
Nonetheless, Louis still has a significant role to play within the Royal Family, much like the siblings of previous kings and queens. But is it truly fair for him to always remain in the shadow of his older brother, Prince George? Perhaps it’s time for the Royal Family to consider a bold move—removing royal titles from younger children and allowing them to choose their own paths.
Prince Harry is often remembered as the “spare,” a role that placed him behind his older brother and, according to him, left him feeling unimportant. Growing up in Prince William’s shadow—who was groomed to be king—was undoubtedly challenging, and Harry ultimately chose to step away.
Why Prince Louis might benefit from losing his royal titles The estranged prince has expressed concern that both Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis could face a similar fate, receiving less attention than Prince George, who will one day become king.
William and Kate are reportedly keen to modernize the monarchy and provide a more normal upbringing for their children. But if normalcy is truly their aim, shouldn’t both Charlotte and Louis have the freedom to forge their own futures?
In my view, it would benefit both Charlotte and Louis if they were stripped of their royal titles, even if that seems radical. Simply put, it’s time for the monarchy to let its youngest members make their own choices.
For one, royal titles are sometimes viewed as outdated. Given the recent criticism of the Royal Family, dropping the titles could help foster a stronger connection with the public. Not to mention, might it also increase their popularity?
“A person of great importance” If Prince Louis were to lose his titles, he could grow up to become a bridge between the monarchy and everyday citizens—something essential for the monarchy’s long-term relevance.
Prince Harry charted a unique path far from royal life. Some royal experts suggest Prince Louis could also be encouraged to pursue a career outside of Buckingham Palace. Should Louis eventually desire a “normal” life, retaining a royal title may make things feel somewhat incongruent.
It’s clear that William and Kate want the best for their children. With this in mind, they could consider removing the royal titles of both Louis and Charlotte. Of course, they probably won’t, which only highlights the fact that the monarchy still has a considerable distance to cover on the journey to true modernity.
