88-year-old Pope Francis dies: A Lowly Employee of the Church Dies

Vatican City — April 21, 2025

Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and the first ever from the Americas, has died at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed on Monday morning. The beloved spiritual leader passed away peacefully at 7:35 AM local time at his residence in Casa Santa Marta within Vatican City.

The announcement was made by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who addressed the world with a heavy heart: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was elected in March 2013 following the historic resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. He quickly became a transformative figure, known for his humility, simplicity, and outspoken advocacy for the poor, the environment, and interfaith dialogue.

His papacy was marked by a return to the core values of compassion and inclusion, often challenging traditions and urging the Church to walk alongside the most marginalized. He chose to live in a modest guesthouse rather than the lavish Apostolic Palace, and was often seen traveling in a modest Ford Focus.

Cardinal Farrell reflected on his legacy, saying: “He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

Pope Francis’ final public appearance occurred just yesterday on Easter Sunday, when he greeted thousands in St. Peter’s Square with a heartfelt “Happy Easter,” delivering what is now seen as a farewell gesture. Despite his visible frailty, he smiled and blessed the faithful, embodying the quiet strength that defined his leadership.

As the Church mourns his loss, tributes have begun pouring in from religious leaders, political figures, and millions of believers across the world. Many remember him not only as a pope, but as a man of the people — a shepherd who never lost sight of the everyday human struggle.

Preparations are now underway for a formal period of mourning and funeral rites, with further details to be announced by the Vatican in the coming hours. Leaders from across the globe are expected to attend the funeral, which will take place in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Pope Francis is remembered not just for his reforms or teachings, but for his example — a man who walked with humility, preached peace, and left behind a Church forever changed by his vision of mercy and love.

He is survived by a global community of 1.3 billion Catholics, many of whom found renewed hope and belonging during his 12-year papacy.
