Denzel Washington has confirmed the heartbreaking announcement šŸ’” We’re going to miss him

Denzel Washington is unstoppable when it comes to this big decision.

The 69-year-old revealed he plans to retire from Hollywood after the slew of acting projects he has in the works.

ā€œI donā€™t know how many more films Iā€™m going to make. Probably not that many,ā€ Washington said during an interview with Australiaā€™s Today on Monday. ā€œI want to do things I havenā€™t done. Iā€™ve played Othello at 22, Iā€™m about to play Othello at 70. After that Iā€™m playing Hannibal. After that Iā€™ve been talking with Steve McQueen about a film. After that Ryan Cooglerā€™s writing a part for me in the next ā€˜Black Panther.ā€™ā€

He added, ā€œAfter that Iā€™m going to do the film ā€˜Othello.ā€™ After that Iā€™m going to do ā€˜King Lear.ā€™ After that Iā€™m going to retire.ā€

Washington got his start in the 1977 made-for-television film ā€œWilma,ā€ followed by the 1981 film ā€œCarbon Copy.ā€

Meanwhile, ā€œBlack Pantherā€ became one of the MCUā€™s signature franchises, with the 2018 film starring Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyongā€™o and Michael B. Jordan earning more than $1.3 billion at the box office.

Boseman died at age 43 in 2020 from colon cancer.

The 2022 sequel, ā€œBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever,ā€ was a tribute to the late actor and continued the story of Wakanda and its people.

These days Washington is focused on promoting ā€œGladiator II,ā€ the sequel to Ridley Scottā€™s 2000 action movie.

Denzel Washington attends the ā€œGladiator IIā€ Paris Special Screening at Pathe Palace on November 10, 2024, in Paris, France.

ā€œGladiator IIā€ is set over two decades after the events of the original ā€œGladiatorā€ film, which starred Russell Crowe. In the sequel, Paul Mescal plays the grown-up Lucius Verus II, the son of Croweā€™s character, Maximus, who ends up forced into slavery and becomes a gladiator to earn his freedom, much like his dad did in the first movie.

Washington portrays former slave and Luciusā€™ mentor, Macrinus. The actor teased his possible retirement in August.

ā€œThere are very few films left for me to make that Iā€™m interested in,ā€ Washington told Empire magazine. ā€œI have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley.ā€

The pair previously worked together on the 2007 film, ā€œAmerican Gangster.ā€

ā€œWe had a great go-round the first go-round [on ā€˜American Gangsterā€™], and here we are,ā€ continued Washington. ā€œHeā€™s engaged. Heā€™s excited about life and his next film. Heā€™s an inspiration.ā€

ā€œWe should all want to feel like that at 86,ā€ the star added.

But during an appearance last month on the UKā€™s ā€œGraham Norton Show,ā€ Mescal, 28, took a moment to gush over meeting the Oscar winner on set.

ā€œIt was a big day in my life ā€” it was amazing. I spent the first day thinking, ā€˜I must go introduce myself to him,ā€™ and I stood there for several minutes before I [decided], ā€˜Not today,ā€™ā€ the actor reminisced. ā€œThe next day I decided to be a brave boy.ā€
